'William Purcell, who later became affectionately known throughout North Mexico as 'Don Guillermo', left his home in Ireland to seek his fortune in Texas and Mexico aged 17, in 1862 during the American Civil War. When he died in San Antonio, 47 years later, he was a multi-millionaire. In Mexico he owned nearly half a million acres of cattle and horse ranches, over two hundred thousand acres of cotton and grain farms, and a number of copper, lead, silver and zinc mines. He built about 80 miles of railway for a company which he inaugurated.' [54]
